spookyeviloneI'm thinking.. parasitic virus. Begins with a mimivirus, hosting a new mutant strain of virophages. Phage therapy being developed to combat HIV and originally tested in Africa or a subcontinent where medical testing regulations are fairly lax. Mimivirus are loaded with current versions of Sputniks carrying reprogrammed T-cells made dormant. Each Sputnik's supposed to launch, find a sample of the T-cells that match its mutation type and 'infect' it with the dormant gene code.
Problem being, Z-Virus was being held dormant in humans by an overlaying viral nuclei.. until the Sputnik finds one infected with HIV and sends it dormant. Once free of the captor virus, Z-Virus becomes a highly contagious predator.
Zombies ensue. The skin sloughing/sores are due to hyperAIDS, rapidly degenerating cell tissue. The pain cortex of the brain is the first thing destroyed, like syphilis or leprosy.
Hm. Must ponder this pandemic.
