Quail sounds.
Nov. 16th, 2008 12:56 amThe birds in these vids are not mine.
Button quail and bobwhite (incorrectly identified as coturnix) quail noises. - freakish little laughing noises. Coturnix don't really do the chuckling thing - that's a Bobwhite trait.
MY TERRITORY!

heh. In the process of playing those vids, my buttons and coturnix started sounding off. The Coturnix sound like little velociraptors - the buttons sound like evil little dolls laughing.
Mine are not this obnoxious. I have one male button that sounds off occasionally during the day, and only one male Coturnix who has to be the pimp-smackin' daddy of the roost. I suspect when the hen in with him is old enough for him to recognize her as a hen, he will stfu somewhat.
I'm amused at myself. I wound up with powder coated steel cages 3'x2'x2', stackable, with locking doors, meant for parrots.. for quail. Thus far, the test pair I have in the cage are much happier, zooming around investigating everything.
Quail need forage, so I almost caved and bought pet grass at Petco. Thankfully, I am an ornery cuss who refuses to pay $6 for wheatgrass. Went to the co-op to buy wheat berries to sprout my own, and lo, they had sprouted trays twice the size of the Petco trays, for $1.99. Instant gratification! I also bought wheat berries and oat groats to try sprouting my own. I am notoriously bad with indoor plants, so we'll see.
