spookyeviloneI can't say they're doing it wrong, because I'm not sure why they're doing what they're doing, but I can say I think they're doing it poorly, because there are better ways to achieve the result they're getting in ways that don't alienate people.
However, if I gave much of a shit, I'd put my sweat equity where my mouth is and get involved in running it. I just don't care that much. Can I do it? Yes. See that big SCA event that I overhauled? The first year, the budget was a fucking nightmare and totally out of control. The second year, the co-steward and I were able to go to a flat fee, because the city made the overhead unbelievably low. Even if they hadn't, how the prices were done had been beaten into something reasonable and formulaic and took a good part of the hope-and-pray stress out of the equation entirely.
I keep toying with the idea of running a small convention. I'd like to do a Firefly shindig, but that's hampered by FlanconII going up in smoke and the one in MN blowing up, so it'd have to be totally out of pocket to begin with - because it would rely on strictly at-the-door fees. After being burned, or hearing about people that were burned, the fastest way to get a black cloud would be to even try to offer pre-reg. Out of pocket would mean either: a) finding investors, or b) having a seriously small con the first year. Which.. I kind of like. It requires headspace to do the planning, which I did not have this year.
Today, I am flat on my back with migraine. If I can stand up without puking this afternoon, I'm either going in to work or writing the day off and getting ready for my garage sale. Still haven't decided whether tomorrow is setup or a sale day. bleh. Should probably do that.
