In love.

My cell phone has been dying a slow death for about five months. I took it in to be serviced a week or so ago, and they claimed to have fixed it, but it was still dropping calls and sounded awful. Today, it would let calls ring in, but the caller couldn't hear me. It was time to get a new phone.

I hate buying new phones. Once I get to know a phone, I don't want to change it or learn the buttons on a new phone. This time, I figured if I was going to get a new phone, it was time to go whole hog and get a smartphone.

After much research, I decided I wanted an Android phone. I have an open source computer, I want to keep up the trend of having open source hardware. I didn't want to leave Sprint. That meant I had very few choices. The two best options were the HTC Hero and the Samsung Moment. The Hero is fully touchscreen, basically an iPhone.. without AT&T or Apple involved. The Moment is a slider phone with full QWERTY keyboard as well as a touchscreen. That's probably the single reason I chose it, right there. The Moment synchs with Google Apps, meaning I could use Google Docs on my phone - I can write, whenever a story bites me, but trying to type one letter at a time on the virtual keyboard would drive me nuts.

I price scouted it online and found a bunch of vendors offering it for $149.99 - $199.99. Sprint was offering it at $279.99 with a $100 mail-back rebate. I called and asked the store if they'd price match the other vendors and they said yes. Tonight, after work, I went to get my phone.

The manager tried to pull a bait and switch, but my sales rep was horrified and had me call Retention Center. After 40 minutes of talking to their supervisor, I not only got the phone for the price I wanted, but they took $20 off my monthly bill for the next 24 months. That plus the discount I get through work means I'll be paying half for my service. We did the deal and I walked out with a shiny new phone.

I've named it Skynet, because I'm pretty sure this phone is going to start the robot holocaust. The app store is so full of neat things. I can use my phone as a metal detector. Pretty much everything I could think of wanting, there's an app for, or the phone just does it.

My phone is a ninja. It looks like a phone, but really, it's a netbook. So far, I'm very pleased with it.

It's 4am. I'm still playing with it.
